River shapes as music

Synthesizers and the Rivanna River, Virginia

Ajay Limaye is partnering with composer and ecoacoustics expert Matthew Burtner (UVA Dept. of Music) on sonifications to translate the geometry of rivers to music. By turning rivers into songs, we seek to open new avenues to connect river researchers from the geosciences and the humanities, and to involve communities and inspire wonder. In the coming years we will share this fusion of art and science with the local community in Charlottesville, VA and nationally through teaching materials for geoscience educators. You can read more about the work in this profile by UVA Today. This work is supported by the National Science Foundation.
