Opportunities

I am always on the lookout for motivated, creative, and intellectually adventurous people to join our group.

UVA undergraduate students are encouraged to consider internships and/or thesis research. For more information see these guidelines. You can also learn about the Environmental Sciences major and other opportunities for growth beyond the classroom.

Prospective graduate students: I will consider applications for the Ph.D. track (only) in the upcoming admissions cycle. Strong applications can take different forms, but most combine a strong GPA (>3.5) including challenging math and science coursework, significant exposure to geoscience research, and a thoughtfully crafted statement of purpose. If this sounds like you, please complete this form to get in touch. I review all submissions and will contact you if I encourage you to apply. Please be patient. While I appreciate your interest, I receive many inquiries and it may take several weeks before I get back to you. Applications are submitted to the UVA Department of Environmental Sciences and are due January 15 for the next academic year; full admissions policies are here. I am not currently recruiting M.S. students, but you may find opportunities with other faculty in our department.

Prospective postdoctoral researchers: I am excited to work with researchers who have a strong career vision and a record of peer-reviewed publications in geomorphology, planetary science, or a closely related field. To start a conversation, please send Ajay ([email protected]) a copy of your CV. US applicants may also wish to consider applying to external fellowships, including the NSF Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, that can support your work here.

The UVA Department of Environmental Sciences advances research spanning geoscience, hydrology, ecology and atmospheric science. In the Landscape Evolution Group, we regularly collaborate with colleagues across the University of Virginia in diverse fields from Astronomy and Computer Science to Landscape Architecture and Music.
